Awana Grand Prix

Last year we attended the Awana Grand Prix (having no idea what it was all about).  We knew it was an event held by our church and that it was hosted directly after Awana bible study.  Turned out to be a great event!  When we heard about the Grand Prix this year, we HAD to get involved.  That meant building pine derby cars; right up my boys' alley (all 3 of them!).  Who am I kidding... it was so much fun, we even drug Grandpa George into the mix to determine how best to legally weigh down the cars to make them faster.  We spent a lot of days prepping the cars, but it was all fun!
We started out with a block of wood and asked the kids what they wanted them to look like.  Kasey instantly shouted out a Shark.  Sure, cause that is easy to make from a block of wood (insert sarcasm here).  He ended up doing a great job.  He drew out where he wanted the cuts made and then asked for some adult help.  Kasey was super excited about his shark car and even painted the teeth ... and I guess I should point out ... the 'blood' in between each tooth on his shark.  The only thing the adults did was dealing with the power tools and spray paint - this thing was fully created by Kasey Cannode!
When we asked Karsten about his car... the first thought was of course a shark, but we talked about making a Karsten creation instead.  The next thought was - a Football car! Karsten also did the drawing of his shape and we assisted with the power tools and spray paint.  The last touches were the football stripes - we think he did a great job!
On race night, you could've cut the tension with a knife... ok, not really.  We were all there just to have fun!  Kris has been an Awana Leader teaching classes every Wednesday this past year.  One of his tasks for the event was to run the Bean Bag Toss game.  We got a quick minute to enjoy a flavored snow cone with Daddy before he started to work.
Then, The Race Was ON!  We learned one very important thing... we need to study Aerodynamics over the next year.  Our cars looked great, but man... they were not the fastest ones on the block.  Oh well, we had fun watching them be raced anyway.
Once we were eliminated from the race... it was time for games. The kids had a blast and never wanted to leave.  I think they kept going back to the bean bag toss as they got a few extra points since daddy was running the event.  It was a fun evening and we even got to watch Kasey win an award for the design of his fishy car!  We have always been impressed with his artsy talent (something we feel he got from Mallory) and it was cool to watch him be awarded for his creativity!
